I am grateful to say my little cake shop has managed to stay busy over the past few years thanks to all of you who graciously offer recommendations to friends, and who often return to commission me for cakes to celebrate the next milestone in your lives. I end up being like a member of the family, baking up the perfect confections to help make certain occasions memorable.

It’s a job I accept with pleasure and one that I find fun and exciting especially when you come to me with a new, never-before-tried idea. Usually the end results are always beautiful, and some designs tend to get popular and catch momentum. With that I wanted to present our top five wedding cake designs. Truth be told this is very telling of the cakes that are trending right now.

One of my favorite parts of caking making is the very end, when I get to deliver the goods. It’s so much fun to bring to life someone’s idea. Sometimes I even linger a little to catch a glimpse of my creation in all its glory. What has caught my eye lately is the way brides are choosing to style their cakes these days. With beautiful linens that create texture, have color and add so much to their wedding illusion; so I thought it would be fun to take a moment to admire how bride are using linens to give their cakes little more character. There’s not harm in offering some wedding cake tips after all. Check out how you can use 4 different types of linens to step up your wedding cake game.

Wedding Cake Tips: 4 Fun Types of Linens to Use for Styling Your Cake

TEXTURED

Have you noticed how creative linens are getting? You can find all different kinds of softness and texture. I really like the idea of picking something textured in a color that is bold and opposite of your cake. Check out how cute this example looks.

LACE

Lace is sexy and romantic. What better linen to help add some extra love and romance to your already intimate wedding affair. In the example of lace we found, I really like how it includes a statement and some cozy photos of the couple.

GLITTER

I have been very in love with the creation of sequins linens. They shine and also add texture, but is perfect if you’re going for a glam look. I love it when weddings are kept simple but also display just a few beautiful and punchy elements like this.

NATURAL

What about going with no linens at all!? Yes, some brides are opting to use natural elements to bring beauty to their wedding cake set up. I gotta say that I do love the look of a simple natural element like fresh flowers, herbs or even fruit.

I see it as my duty to keep you in the know about cake styles that are trending and lately sugar flowers are catching my eye. It’s true that they’ve existed for a long time so they aren’t a new invention, but the use of fondant and the ability to “build-with-baking” means cake artists are turning out sugar flowers that are show stopping and gorgeous.

Sugar flowers can be made to look like real flowers, they can take on big shapes, any color, they can be whimsical and you can create essentially any type of flower you can imagine. There’s a new cake category in town; whimsical cakes are popping up at many celebrations near you and we take a moment to discuss the evolution, how to decide you want one, and admire the features of a few whimsical cakes.

Over the years cakes have gone from being just birthday cakes, to being show stopping, creative declarations of whimsical. With the use of fondant, which allows cake makers to build, cakes have grown character, color and imagination over the more recent years. The whimsical cake is dreamy and almost too pretty to eat.

Whimsical cakes are perfect if you are planning a wedding, birthday, or baby shower for which your palette is soft and mostly pastel, and you love this cake trend, then I would encourage you to go with one of the beautiful creations of wild imagination.

It’s been a tradition, since the late nineteenth century for couples to save the top tier of their wedding cake to enjoy on their first wedding anniversary. Regardless of whether people are even still practicing this tradition, there is something special about the top tier of a wedding cake. Especially with the amount of creative ability cake makers have these days with the inception of new inventions like the edible printer, or more creative uses for fondant, it’s easy to dream up and make possible any cake motif your heart might desire for.

There is also a new wedding cake trend which involves designing a single layer cake and then a collection of cupcakes that compliments the main piece and has the benefit of being a little more cost effective. Our gallery today shows just how beautiful these new wedding cake trends can be. I hope these images inspire you to go for what your heart desires.  Which one is your favorite?

The Mexican Wedding Cake: Inserting Culture into Your Cake Design

Part of the reason for us keeping up with a blog is to have a platform to bring you news on all the latest cake trends, in addition to ideas for being daring when it comes to your cakes and celebrations. Trending in cyberspace lately are cakes that have a little culture to them, but we especially want to talk about one particular design that’s turning heads. We’re talking about the Mexican Wedding Cake.

One of the fun aspects of going with a more "cultured" cake, is that you can play with color a bit more. It's one element the Mexican wedding cake has mastered. It tastefully pairs an array of bright colors that do not look one bit like they are clashing, instead the pairings work. When it comes to selecting a more "cultured" cake of course you don’t have to go with the Mexican theme variety, but you can take this cultural cake idea in many different directions.

For the sake of sticking with our subject, check out this collection of Mexican wedding cake images. These artists got it right. Which one is your favorite? Tell us in the comments below. Let us bake you your next cake! See our menu.

Five Types of Edible Wedding Favors

The wedding favor is a small gift given to the guest of a wedding. There have been many creative renditions of favors, but today we talk about the best kind, the edible wedding favor.

Beside the entire occasion itself, guests look forward to weddings not just to watch friends and family share in the memory of a milestone, but also because of all the goodies. Yes, we're even referring to wedding favors. It's true, there are all kinds of wedding favors but today we are going to discuss our very favorite type, the edible.

We like the idea of the edible wedding favor because you not only create a beautiful, single serving little package which makes guests feel special, but if you are really selective about what you put inside, you also create a delicious memory that your guest will always associate with your celebration. Lets jump into some favorites so you can see how easy (and sometimes ecco) it is to go with an edible favor.

Five Types of Edible Wedding Favors

1. The Ready to Eat Pretty Package. When it comes to edible wedding favors, it's really simple to go with a "ready-to-go" option. This just means you buy your goodies in bulk, your pretty packaging, put the two together and your favors are good to go.

2. The All-In-One Jar Mix. I really love the way this type of edible looks. The idea behind it is that you select your favorite baked good (or hot chocolate) mix, buy the ingredients and mix them in advance. Select a style of jar you like and fill it with the mix. Your guests get to enjoy a little baked good in the comfort of their home.

3. Artisan Cupcake Package. This option is definitely going to be a little heavier on the budget, but a fun one. This involves ordering your favorite mini cupcakes, from Cake Made By M.E.'s menu (or your favorite local baker), maybe even treat everyone to sprinkles. Buy your pretty packaging in advance and put it all together.

4. The S'more Kit. We're sure you've probably seen the s'more kit favor hanging around your Pinterest feed and we think it's fabulous. It is one that is lighter on the budget. You buy the ingredients, your pretty packaging and then put it all together. Splurge on delicious gourmet chocolate and marshmallows for an extra special touch.

5. The Treat Yourself Later Favor. This type of favor involves sharing something you absolutely love and giving a little of that to your guests for them to enjoy later. Think your favorite lotion, tea leaves or even a special flavor of coffee. Then like the rest of our suggestions, pick out some pretty packaging and put it all together.
